Nautical fashion and style

Nautical Style: nautical fashion inspiration

Nautical style is inspired by a life at sea. Think sailing, bayside living and quaint fishing villages. Nautical outfits often include features of uniforms worn out at sea. The Brenton stripe is one of the most iconic elements of nautical fashion. The distinctive navy and white stripe originated from clothing worn by sailors from French costal villages.  Nautical outfits often feature relaxed silhouettes, reminiscent of clothing worn while sailing the open seas.  Crisp white pieces, with button details, also feature heavily, giving a nod to classic naval uniforms.

Classic Nautical Style

Classic Nautical style is all about natural fibres, relaxed silhouettes and sailing inspired detailing. Navy, red and white are the cornerstones of traditional nautical fashion. Boat necks are also a common feature, along with button detailing inspired by navy uniforms.

Classic Nautical Color Palette

The classic nautical color palette is dominated by navy, white and red. Stone and camel neutrals also feature, predominantly in natural accessories aimed to resemble maritime ropes.

Modern Nautical Fashion

Modern nautical looks combine fresh seasonal colors with elements of traditional nautical styling, to create a contemporary fashion statement. Traditional colors can also be muted, to provide a fresh take on nautical.

Coral Inspired Modern Nautical Color Palette

Replacing red with coral is a common way of revamping the classic nautical look.  Coral featured heavily on the runways recently, so adding it as an accent color is a great way to bring a fresh take to nautical styling.

Designers that Nailed the Modern Nautical Look

Lover nautical outfit

One of our favorite modern nautical looks was created by Lover the Label. Lover muted the classic nautical color palette to create a fresh take on Nautical style. The high waited asymmetrical skirt, paired with a boatneck crop top, was bang on trend. Button detailing featured on the skirt to further enhance the nautical vibe. A red printed silk scarf finished off the look.

Nautical Accessories

Nautical accessories often incorporate features of sailing tools and accessories. For example, canvas fabrics similar to ship sails, rope detailing and natural linen fabrics. Nautical accent colors are often inspired by maritime flags, buoys and sailing accessories.

Tommy Hilfiger turned heads on Insta with this cute nautical inspired outfit. The cropped, printed sweat featured a statement anchor print and naval inspired button detailing on the shoulder.  Metallic coated, high wasted shorts were paired with simple white sneakers to complete the look.

Celebrities wearing nautical inspired outfits

Kate Middleton chose a classic nautical inspired outfit when launching the King's Cup sailing competition back in 2019. The outfit incorporated many of the iconic elements associated with classic nautical styling. She wore the traditional Breton stripe knit and paired it with relaxed gaucho pants, with naval inspired button detailing. Her choice of red clutch gave a nod to the classic nautical color palette, while adding an element of interest to the ensemble.
