What to Wear in Vienna

General Style Tips

  • As commented on in the main text on Austria, in the main people dress in smart, stylish clothes.
  • The style tends to be classic, understated and in darker more subdued colors.
  • By far the easiest way of seeing many of the sights in Vienna is on foot. Many are close together and there are lots of them, so you can find yourself on your feet most of the day. Make sure your footwear is smart but comfortable – we recommend Hotter shoes, for guaranteed comfort with style.
  • Heels are great in the evenings though, teemed with a smart dress or skirt.
  • If you can, avoid wearing sneakers as they will mark you out as a tourist.
  • If you plan a trip to the opera or theater we suggest that you make an effort. For men a jacket but not necessarily a tie, and for women a smart pair of pants or dress will make you feel more comfortable. You can often spot tourists by their far more scruffy attire, something that local theater goers do not appreciate.
  • The Viennese Ball Season runs through the winter, and these are very formal occasions – for men black tie/tuxedo and women wear long dresses or gowns. The Opera Ball at the Vienna State Opera House is the highlight of the international season.

Pack for the Weather

  • If you are visiting in the winter; December, January and February then be sure to pack a warm coat, gloves, scarf and warm hat or you will find yourself buying them locally and they are not cheap. Vienna is an expensive city so be sure to pack all that you need. And you will see plenty of fur.
  • Also in the winter you will find open-air ice rinks too; great fun if you have packed the scarf and gloves.
  • The winter as well as layers, you need really good boots with soft rubber soles. It's important that you get soft rubber soles because even medium soles get really hard in the freezing cold. Make sure too that they have large spaces between the tracks, or the snow will get stuck in them and make them very slippery.
  • We love the Weather+ app – it gives an accurate 6 day forecast for day and night, which when you're planning from home is really helpful. You can keep all the places you've been to too – a nice way to remember your trip 🙂 Download for iPad/iPhone or Android
