3 Ways To Wear… A Camisole

The key to packing light is to choose items that can be worn in different ways to suit different occasions. In this series we give some suggestions for our top capsule wardrobe staples.

This week: The camisole. Wear it as…

Cami - trekking outfit1. A base layer

Wear your cami as a base layer underneath a t-shirt, shirt, sweater, coat – as many layers as you need!

Great for trekking when the temperatures start cool in the early mornings but really heat up during the day – shed the outer layers to let the sun reach your shoulders.

Or on cool city breaks a cami will give you an extra cosy layer out in the cold, but you can remove some of the bulky top layers when you go indoors.

Cami - beach outfit2. A beach top

A staple for beach destinations when you need to cover up a little but still want to keep cool.

Pop one over your swimwear at lunch, or match with shorts or a skirt and comfy sandals for sightseeing – just remember your sunscreen on those shoulders!

Cami - evening outfit3. An evening top

Even the simplest cami looks great matched with smart separates. Team it with a linen skirt and costume jewelry for a relaxed beach vibe, or add jeans and a jacket for city style.

Choosing your camisoles

By their nature they take up very little space, so you an easily pop a couple of choices in your case. They wash easily with a quick splash in the sink and will dry quickly on a sunny balcony.

Any plain cami in your strongest shades will work – just remember to co-ordinate them with your other layers. Lace edging or an eye-catching pattern will give a dressier feel.

Cotton or silk are good to wear in both hot and cold climes, whilst linen packs brilliantly. Merino wool is soft and lovely to wear against your skin – it regulates your body temperature whether you need to keep cool or warm, and doesn't retain odours.  Avoid ‘fashion' fabrics in warmer weather as they will make you sweat more and feel uncomfortable.

Choose from wide tank or spaghetti straps, and if you need it go for one with built-in chest support. A close-fitting style will work best under other layers.
